From a few past years Anime industry is giving us more than how much usually is expected from Action genre section. Motivated from the same, the purpose of this post is to look upon the best action Anime show of past few years, from 2017 to 2019 exactly. Which covers the time when some great series continued such as My hero academia, and many premiered for the first time and it's quite unchallenging to say that they'd turn out to become some of the long running Action Anime in future.
When it's about a specific genre something could be favorite of one and the same thing maybe is just a mediocre for another. I sticked up with what I felt like should be in their best position. Also yeah, the list doesn't includes long running anime such as Boruto, One piece or Black Clover.
1. ATTACK ON TITAN Season 2-3
After having a blast in the year 2013, season 2 of Attack on Titan premiered in june 2017, which in my opinion was just quite okay-ish, however season 3 nailed everything! Especially part 2. Fight between Levi and Beast Titan gave thrills to the bones, to be honest I wouldn't even call it a fight but the instance and the situation which they were in provided a very new league to those 30 seconds. Not just that scene only but this whole show is forged with action, trill, despair and thesaurus.
If you're not know to Attack on Titan yet, this show centres the world where humans aren't in the top of the food chain, instead, Titans are there. A human eating creatures which are of the size of a beast. To avoid Titans humans here live only in a specified safe place which is behind very very big walls.
Now it has been decades since someone behind those walls saw an actual Titan. However, one normal day, the wrath of gigantic Titans did broke through the walls and numerous people were again eaten alive. After getting his mother eaten, Eren Yeager, takes the resolve to kill all the titans present in this world, sticking with the resolve first step is to enroll in Scouts regiment, a specialised unit to fight Titans, however, whenever they venture outside world most are eaten by Titans. This show is highly recommended, I really like the concept and to support there is this sharp intense animation style which at times makes a moment breathtaking.
2. MY HERO ACADEMIA season 2-3
Season 2 and 3 were already out in 2017 and 2018 and without any second thought, yes, they was really worthwhile to spend time on. Now in the month of October we have season 3 to wait for and hopefully that's gonna be a blast as well. What I like about how My Hero Academia is going is the character development, every character has grown in time for example Bakugo, I'm really liking how he is keeping with Midoriya or how Midoriya is keeping with Bakugo when the past was quite miserable. Another thing I like about My Hero Academia is that not just Heroes, but the Villains are also facing their share of problems, they are having their own mystery and room to grow.
If you have been living under a rock and do not know what My Hero Academia Anime is. Let me tell you a story of a little boy who lives in a world where everyone has some special powers, whether is it to control fire or ignite fire, become invisible or to become as big as a giant, literally any kind of power one can possess and these powers are known as "Quirks" each person has their own Quirk to be proud of. But there is this little fella who dream to be a hero one day but isn't gifted with any quirk to embark on his dreams. Even after years of struggle he still couldn't be like the people who possess their own powers, this is just how the world of My Hero Academia works, all men are not equal. That little fella, Midoriya never gave up on his dreams because of the heart of a hero he possesses which isn't very common for a man to have, this heart led him to the powers of Almight, the greatest hero of all times, how? You'll have to watch to find that out.
3. SEVEN DEADLY SINS Season 2
After Season 1 in 2014 it's been about sure that there definitely will be a season 2 of this overpowered show thus, keeping up with the prolonged wait of more than 3 years, in 2018 season 2 was released, with even more action alongside prowess for which this series is actually admired for. Different power levels are unlocked as well, nevertheless Demon race from back thousand years are eligible to distort seven Deadly Sins, in the prologue likely. And new characters such as Escanor accelerated the amazement of this season even more further. I have so much to talk about from this season however, since I'm not suppose to ruin the show who have been living under the tortoise shell, here is how synopsis of Seven Deadly Sins go;
The story of Britannia where once a group of knights named as the Seven Deadly Sins were disbanded for being suspected as traitors because they were maybe plotting to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. Rumors still exist that they perhaps are still alive somewhere. To take their place Holy Knights came into possession however, this came at a price. 10 Years later, Holy knight overthrew the Kingdom themselves then is when Princess Elizabeth went on to the venture of reviving the lost Seven Deadly Sins.
4. DEMON SLAYER
2019 has too much for us to offer, in the party here is the Demon Slayer. It is among some of the best 2019 Anime premiered this year, if someone considers Demon Slayer as best of all the shows so far this year, I wouldn't be the least surprised, it's just how magnificent this Anime is. Amazing Plot. Very satisfying characters. Beautiful sceneries, and how can we forget, the Action, they didn't hold anything back, usually there's been a trend going on that, if the art of animation is 'beautiful' then in most Anime we don't see blood and much of a crazy fight, however Demon Slayer took the challenge and it's offering really fantastic results. I just love how it's depicted, slaying the demons, brother protecting his demon-sister with his life. In addition the dark past and cruel reality just adds up a bonus to this show.
If you're not yet familiar with Demon Slayer Anime. It's a world where Demons coexist along with humans however, not in a good terms, human flesh hungry demons. They wander around everywhere at the time of night, murders and victims from them are very often, to terminate those demons there are Demon Hunter cops, a rank in this world which requires an intense training, defined sacrifice and death battles. They are the people who are strong enough to take a demon down.
Tanjiro Kamado was a normal boy until that snowy day when he was out in the city to sell charcoal but on his return he witnessed a massacred house where everyone in his family was slaughtered like an animal by a demon and the only survivor was Nezuko, one of his sister.. barely alive after becoming a demon herself but because of the love for his brother she managed to control her desire to eat another human. With these misfortunes going on in their life, Tanjiro makes a resolve to cure his sister at any cost because now she is the only one he has. But first above all he needs to become strong. Strong enough to take fight demons.
5. VINLAND SAGA
Anime from summer 2019 "Vinland Saga". To be honest I was planing on to upvote it to #4 but because up this date only 9 episodes are released which aren't too many to juridic, however I believe this show has an astonishing future and without a doubt it is my favorite action seinen anime of summer 2019 season. This is the stuff for which I had been waiting for a prolonged period of time, the theme which dives into the history, the tenure of Icelandic sagas!
As for synopsis if you haven't watched this Anime yet,
The era of chronic wars, the epoch of when the Vikings had quite a reputation for themselves as the strongest families with a thirst for violence, but there settled a certain small village far away from those chronics, Iceland. Lead by a former hero of battlefield, one among the greatest of Jomsviking, Thors. A warrior who has lost his will to kill other, he undermined his own identity and started to live a peaceful life in Iceland but the senere vaned when one of his old comrades found him out. The smell of battlefield called him yet again.
Astounding, nothing lower to astonishing is the word. How much I scrutinize, I can't find a single instance which wasn't satisfactory to my eyes. Right from the initiation of Vinland Saga, which lands in the middle of a battlefield, a perfect suggestion for the fan of a thriller loving action anime. There aren't many Anime these days which adapts from historical theme, especially not which centres Vikings, at least I have not found any yet, except for the Vinland saga. Vinland saga takes you to the era when the world was unstable, constant wars, slave trade, dominance of certain group or king were at its acme. These were the time when psychology of people was inclined on the abstract that, the one who kills the most in the war is the one greatest of all, succeeding with the certificate to impart in havens after the death.
6. DEVILMAN CRYBABY
This world has always been dominated by demons, yet again, they have come to remind their existence to the whole world. A world where humans have begun to transform into demons? How will Akira, a highly sensitive guy who has taken control over his own demon mutation which rendered him the form and strength of a demon but a heart of a Human… A devilman! Alongside his mysterious friend, Ryo, a young scientist, they resolve to save humanity from this turmoil by eradicating all the demons from this world.. but how.. when the demon is in the human?
This show is just incredible. Owing to the position of best 2018 Anime, this show is way many steps ahead of a regular Action-Plot-Apocalypse show because it doesn't only feature the attempts of demons to take over this world but emphasize on how distorted the humans are.. The starve to get popular.. The desperation of prioritising themselves above everyone.. The ACTUAL demon-ish nature of a human in turmoil and much more. From crying over a news of car accident to Mass killing of millions to Brutal torture, suspecting, Nuclear attacks and excessive nudity this Anime connects it all.
This Anime made me rethink, who Devils really are, what devilant people are.. and who is supposed to have the authority to decide and categories such section present in society.
Many people consider the animation as its downside, however, including me, some find it quite neat and just ok-ish. However I may as well agree, they did a pretty shabby work if we talk about wholesome animation. I certainly didn't like how they ignored some backgrounds and stuff, so yeah, it's quite a downside. Something off topic, I'd recommend English dub for this Anime, it's really well done.
7. ONE PUNCH MAN season 2
There's no possibility of not including Saitama when the caption of discussion is Action Genre. First season of this show was premiered in sept. 2015, and since it turned out as one of the major hits of that year, they had to bring out season 2, so, after prolonged wait for season 2 of One Punch Man Anime, it's finally out in April, 2019! And of course it didn't let many hopes down.
If some of you are yet not known to One Punch Man show, you're missing something really good after being an Action genre fan. As about this show particularly, this Anime centres a guy named "Saitama" who is a 'Hero for fun' Saitama use to be a normal guy in his 20s until a few years back when he got really determined to become a hero and put his body to an intense physical training schedule which was, 100 Pushups, 100 Sit Ups, 100 Squats and a 10KM Run everyday. Even though this schedule sound quite normal for Action Anime world,( not in real life of course lol). It rendered him some really godly physical strength, after the training he became so powerful that now he is bored because every enemy he faces can't stand him for more than one punch.
Even though in season 1, there was not any kind of actual storyline or plot to begin with (that happened to be the major drawback for me) it was still too much fun to watch. As about season 2 which premiered in April,2019, this time they emphasized more on building up the plot section, but unlike season 1 there wasn't much of an actual battle where Saitama happen to use even 40% of his strength, so yeah that was kind of a let down for fanbase. However, they did invited many promising characters and Action scenes and above all a story which promotes that the Anime will be on the run for more seasons!
8. FIRE FORCE
Another contribution to summer 2019, Fire Force is among some of the most hyped Anime of summer 2019, surely yeah, there is a reason for it being very likeable.
This anime set its foot in the world where at any minute a human can turn into a human combustion, with no warning or syndromes to beware of. In more paraphrased words, the place where humans have started exploding.. any time, at any place most above all, in no slight notice. To take care of the victims, here comes the team of Fire force company! Our protagonist Shinra is a neophyte to this occupation however he isn't new to the phenomenon as his past was dreadful because these happenings were the reason why his family died and why his nickname is "Devil" , nevertheless with utter determination to be regarded as a hero one day.
9. MEGALOBOX
A boxer of great skills isn't always born in the family of great wealth. In the outskirts of a certain city of Japan, in the area of slums there’s a nameless guy, a street fighter, Junk Dog. This is a world where boxing is a very popular sport, however boxing here isn't exactly the same as how we have. Here boxers fight while wearing a metal frame which makes their attacks much more lethal also looks kinda cool.
To be honest I’m not a big fan of sports anime, although yes, I too have some exceptions such as, Haikyuu, Inazuma eleven and a few more including Megalo Box. Reason why I have Megalo Box in my list is, first, the main character isn’t a super human nor he is a noob to boxing. I’m the kind of guy who celebrate the development of a character which in Megalo Box is quite emphasized. Second, they have done quite a decent job in just 10 episodes alongside having quite fascinating execution of plot and concept. Third, the animation style, it’s old highschool type animation, one of my favourites, It suits really well when we talk blood and quality action of sport, It send the feeling of originality of the moment and not to forget the intense look of a guy which itself shape a normal instance into a hyped moment.
As the story line, I always root for a guy who starts his journey from the level zero, similar to our guy. In the world where being a slum means no citizenship and no citizenship mean, no taking part in any legal boxing tournament, how will a nameless guy participate and may win against those top notch the Megalo tournament?
10. YOUJO SENKI (Saga of Tanya the Evil)
A world where magic exists and war is on rage. In the middle of everything, an infamous soldier known for her ruthless and devil-ish ways to serve her fatherland, by forfeiting her own comrades in the course of accomplishing the given command.
Oh wait. Things actually aren't as simple as they sound, the girl I talked about was originally a male in his 30s' , working in a corporate of some company but because of his atheist nature, in the moments of his death, God themselves reincarnated him in a very different world, in the body of a newly born girl, so that he could go through pain and misery and start having faith in God. However as if now, she's more devil-ish than ever.
I'm actually not a big fan of little kids fighting in war and being a commander and all, that just doesn't fit right in and because of that reason alone I was about to drop this anime however in the second episode when I learned the fact that she was actually a he and also having the possession of her memories, it kind of felt quite relieved and I begin to enjoy the show. As particularly about Action, they have it a lot, what else could be more thrilling than watching a war between nations, with the assistance of Magical guns, stones and blood. CGI Animation is also quite well done in most of the parts.
11. INUYASHIKI
It's not an everyday sci-fi - action - fantasy anime, Inuyashiki boots itself in the modern transforming society where we all are living. This Anime depicts the true nature of a society where, 'Appearance is everything' an old looking humane person is being neglected and beauty gets all the attention. This series definitely gives a hold to those 'young handsome' protagonist who steal all the show in these recurrent days.
The story tells the sad truth of how reckless and stupid decisions can a teen of our generation takes. After watching you might think twice of your own wisdom. I like this Anime not because of those CGI fight scenes but because Inuyashiki tries to emphasize itself to the problems of real-world, starvation to achieve something, villain of everyday, deadly diseases, kind and self-centred people, they cover it all in just 11 episodes, alongside keeping in touch with action, Mass killing, humanitarian crisis and more. They lands to the immaturity of youngsters and how fragile their heart is, whether the person is kind or evil, which automatically indulges you to an emotional rollercoaster.
As about the plot, Inuyashiki is a 58 year old man but because of some disease, in appearance he looks more like 75 which don’t go well with his family and every time get an ignorance from the members of his own family, having this bypassing his life, he gets to know that he is suffering from cancer. Story takes a turn at one night when an Alien blast mutate his whole body to an alien cyborg, rendering him many unthinkable prowess, Interesting fact is, he is not alone, a guy of 17 years is also rendered similar powers but he chooses to use them for “fun”.
